Welcome

The Barber and Cosmetology Industry has been selected by CN-CFNBA as one of the cultural competencies and marketplace growth industries for its Smart Growth 5-Year Signature Plan (2005–2010).

To ensure its rightful place in awareness, connectivity and growth, we will offer a number of points for access, participation and support.

Our targeted audience include: licensed barbers, cosmetologists, dermatologist, massage technicians, cosmetic surgeons, students, colleges, suppliers and distributors.

What is Cosmetology?
The art or profession of applying cosmetics. For us it is total care in “the cosmetic treatment of the skin, hair, and nails”.

What is Barber?
A person whose occupation it is to cut and dress the hair of customers, esp. men, and to shave or trim the beard.

Innovation
We seek new introductions to these two trades and will launch our first on Monday, March 3, 2008. It is the introduction of a NEW business association for barber and cosmetology.

It is the 2008 Inaugural celebration of MPA-BC Group - Milwaukee Professionals Association Barber and Cosmetology Group.

We seek business development, microcredit and conventional financing, image development, education attainment, public policy, customer care and best practices.

DIGITAL DIVIDE
The 2nd Annual Media, Wireless & YOU Syntopican is a two-day focus on how we can implement broadband opportunities in Milwaukee in a way that it is neighborhood-customer friendly and will help empower Milwaukeeans, especially its majority population - People of Color and the Working Poor.

We seek a Smart Growth environment, that is state-of-the-art, high in customer care, high in literacy, high in access, competitive; and, engages the neighborhood-stakeholder partnerships, collaboratives, and resource-building to improve economic development and quality of life.

We are pleased that MSOE/Milwaukee School of Engineering has agreed to partner with us again this year and provide the Todd Weir Conference Center, 2020 N. Broadway.

TOPICS/SESSIONS
5-Year Signature Plan
The 5-Year Signature Plan has chosen Milwaukee Public Library, the Federated Library System and Milwaukee Public Schools as the primary “digital campuses” for public engagement of digital technology. This symposium will look at ways and means for creating a digital pipeline for Milwaukeeans, especially People of Color and the Working Poor of Milwaukee.

Government Giving
Budget fine-tuning and bundling of resources is key.

We will also do outreach to our nearby surburban and rural neighbors for SmartGrowth and better/best access for all.

Lastly, we know that providing this environment will aid in Milwaukee truly becoming 100% Wireless and a leader in neighborhood-focused broadband services.

ACCESS & INTEGRATION
We will look intensely at access management systems such as LOIS/LocationOne Integrated System, SAM/Comprise Technologies Inc., Pharo, and Faronics systems that provide day-to-day operations presently in Milwaukee and nearby areas.

We will take a look at the linkage of the federate library system, intergovernmental linkage, UW-Milwaukee, Milwaukee Area Technical College, and Milwaukee Public Schools in better/best use of the Milwaukee Wireless Initiative for People of Color and the Working Poor.

Day 1 & 2
The two-day event will not only have guest speakers but will also have breakout discussions to customize the learning, sharing and problem solving. It is a time to examine infrastructure issues that include the following:

· construction and contracting – Infrastructure changes
The City of Milwaukee head of households and highest residential population is grappling with major issues of high “un-employment and under-employment”, yet workers and contractors are being imported to work from outside of the City of Milwaukee in droves. Some of the census tracts are up to 60% unemployment.

This panel which includes un-/under-employed Milwaukeeans, trades members, members of media, neighborhood and corporate businesses, state-funded academic settings, clergy, the budget office and elected officials – will take a critical look at the challenges and provide immediate and long-term action solutions.

· digital divide – Big, Powerful, Not-Inclusive
The mayor and common council of City of Milwaukee signed off on a 20-year Agreement in 2006 (Milwaukee Wireless Initiative), to provide the entire 96.7 square miles of Milwaukee, 100% access to wireless.

The problem: People of Color and the Working Poor were/are left out of digital planning and decision making, digital access, digital literacy, digital employment, digital BUY-IN.

There are sessions – panel and plenary to address this huge and paramount concern.

Milwaukee Public Library and the Federated Library system has been chosen as the “digital pipeline” for access, therefore a thorough look at:

Touch-Points

  • 1-year research “touch points” of Milwaukee Public Library by Mary Glass, Campaign Neighborhood - CFNBA
  • access management systems (LOIS, SAM, PHARO, FARONICS, CISCO)
  • funding, oversight
  • libraries as digital campuses
  • Milwaukee Wireless Initiative (City of Milwaukee & Midwest Fiber Network, LLC)
  • neighborhood governance
  • what is in place

Partnership Development

  • academic settings
  • church organizations
  • contractors
  • developers
  • government
  • law firms
  • real estate organizations
  • social service organizations
  • technology vendors
  • workforce development organization

· food industry – Lena’s, Roundy’s and Neighborhood Partnerships

The food industry is one of the aeas we have identified as a “growth” industry for empowering the City of Milwaukee in business and job development.

Lena’s and Roundy’s are corporate organizations in Milwaukee that the City of Milwaukee and stakeholders have “opened the city and personal coffers”. Both have shown growth in the last 5 years and are recognized as a mainstay in providing food and employment.

Media

The means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, magazines, e-News, Blogs and outdoor billboards that reach or influence people widely.

Today in Milwaukee the control of Media is very centralized, marginalized and monopolized.

People of Color and the Working Poor are the missing part of the Milwaukee Media puzzle for a more well-rounded and inclusive media access and distribution.

The 5-Year Signature Plan has Media Reform as another initiative for neighborhood/City of Milwaukee infrastructural growth as well as Smart Growth state and national.

Specific sessions will address “linkages and the benefits” that come from connectivity around a central theme.

Community Media
We have a number of printings monthly from individuals, organizations and professional groups that are a vital source to necessary communication to our neighborhoods.

The following sessions will address this premise.

  • radio, television and print media in for the long-haul.
  • monopoly in Wisconsin
  • Media, Wiress and YOU Network

Other issues/topics

  • health/wellness
  • internet competitiveness vs customer care
  • MEDIA - print, radio, talk, tv, cable, outdoor advertising
  • literacy
  • local, state and federal guidelines
  • public relations
  • security (commercial, residential and public)
  • school of information studies
  • telecommunications and oversight

We will have an opportunity for exhibits.

Special sessions geared to entrepreneurism of small neighborhood business owners and first- and second-generation business owners in the Inner City is a priority.
